Based on an organic farm in the beautiful Kent countryside Commonwork’s education programme is for school, college and community groups. Our education programme is well established and we aim to make sure that your learning needs are met… and that you also have a really good day out.

The variety of resources available at Bore Place means that we can offer a range of programmes and activities, tailor-made to suit your group’s needs. All programmes include a farm visit. Programmes include

Activities are curriculum linked and the emphasis is on learning by doing and encouraging cooperative work. All programmes include a visit to our organic dairy farm.

What we do 

Commonwork's education co-ordinator will work with you to plan the visit, ensuring curriculum and special needs are met.  

The emphasis is on learning by doing and encouraging co-operative working.

The programme below gives examples of primary school visits, many of which can be adapted for secondary schools.

In addition, for secondary schools we can offer:

 organic farm studies
 genetics on the farm
 science/geography fieldwork.

There are also a number of opportunities for work experience placements with the:
 Farm  Gardens  Conference Centre  Office  Education Department
Especially for years 10 and 11 students.

 

 

THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT

Discovering how all living things depend on each other!

 

With a 500 acre organic farm and an array of habitats, ponds, streams, meadows and fields, woods and gardens, children can experience at first hand a sustainable approach to food production and land management through

pond dipping 
minibeasts studies
plant studies

 

 

ENVIRONMENTAL ARTS

National curriculum links:  Art & Design, Science

 

How to turn sand, sawdust, compost, animal food and coal dust into a work of art!

 

Choose three of the following activities:

 

Use natural resources, collected from the farm site, to create works of art eg collage scenes

Make models with Bore Place clay and learn how the clay changes as it dries and is fired

Make a weave with natural materials

Papermaking using recycled paper

Create landscapes with clay, sticks and stones

Make natural dyes from plants

Collagraphs (making prints from a variety of natural materials)

 

 

RECYCLED ARTS

National curriculum links:  Art & Design, Science

 

How to use recycled materials found at Bore Place to make works of art!

 

Choose three of the following activities:

 

Mosaics (can be a full day programme or part of a mixed programme)

Collagraphs (making prints from different materials)

Papermaking (turning used paper into new paper)

Make a collage using unwanted materials

 

 

BRICKMAKING

National curriculum links:  Science, Design & Technology 

 

How to change a lump of gooey clay into a high quality brick!

 

Visit one of the few remaining hand made brickworks
Go into the mound of clay – dug from the ground here at Bore Place
Learn how brickmakers turn the raw clay into shaped bricks, dry and then fire them.
Make your own bricks using the same tools
Learn about brick bond patterns and then use to construct a brick wall
Compare human and animal needs for shelter and see the different buildings at Bore Place.

 

 

HOMES AND HOUSES

Discover the variety of homes and houses at Bore Place!

 

Learn about the variety of materials used to build homes and houses
See the farm buildings and where the cows live
Have a go at constructing a shelter for a minibeast in the Green Man Glade
Try your hand at wattle and daubing
Make an animal home from Bore Place clay

 

 

FOOD TECHNOLOGY AND FARM PROCESSES
