Chloe Phillips (b.19/02/1949 - )

Date (s) of recording: 22/09/2009
Location of recording: staff office at Bore Place.

Chloe Phillips’ grandparents, Edmund and Eunice Freeman owned Bore Place from 1910s/1920s to 1962. Chloe’s family moved nearby to the former gamekeeper’s cottage, Fernhill in 1961, in order to be nearer the grandparents.

Chloe was born in Surrey and has lived in the Sevenoaks area of Kent for many years. She still lives locally, having worked all over the country as a chef during her career.

Her father, Anthony Tressidar Freeman was born at Bore Place on 25 March 1920. (?) Chloe was the second of 4 children born between 1946 and 1956.

Her grandparents, Edmund and Eunice Freeman had 3 children, Jack, Betty and Anthony, Chloe’s father. They moved into Bore Place farm after world war one – probably late 1910s, early 1920s. Chloe’s Uncle Jack managed the farm. The family also owned a business manufacturing and selling ladies’ clothes in a chain of boutiques in the South East of England called “Miss Mayfair”.

When they left in the 1960s, Bore Place farm was a mix of beef, dairy and arable.

During the recording on 22 September 2009 Chloe recounted her memories of the farm, gardens, house, living and playing in the fields around the site, her grandparents and the staff they employed in the house and garden.

During the recording made with Chloe Phillips in 2009, she annotated a 1990s map of Bore Place with her memories of the site during the 1960s when her grandparents owned Bore Place. Download the PDF Map

Our thanks to Chloe Philips for generously contributing her time and knowledge to this project.
